A guide to Japan's long-term residence entry points, permanent-residence routes, residence periods, separate applications and official sources. A visa or residence period is not an automatic grant of permanent residence.

Ordinary ten-year permanent-residence route
The standard permanent-residence route used by many work and business statuses. It requires a separate application and review; holding a long-term status for ten years does not itself grant permanent residence.
Highly Skilled Professional points acceleration route
A permanent-residence route that can shorten the ordinary residence period when the applicant can prove the required Highly Skilled Professional points at the relevant historical and application stages.
A special highly skilled route assessed through prescribed education or professional experience and high-income conditions rather than the ordinary points table. Permanent residence still requires a separate application.
Japanese national / permanent-resident family route
A residence-period exception for qualifying spouses and biological children of a Japanese national, permanent resident or special permanent resident. The relationship, residence and good-conduct conditions must be reviewed separately.
